The Possum’s Car Is Still Cruising
When Clyde Castle of Gillett learned who the Tioga County (PA) Fair had slated as their featured singer, he knew he had something special to add to that event. What better attraction to pair with the Princess of Country Music than her father’s once beloved chariot, a 1963 Ford Galaxie convertible!
Named after her father, the only daughter of country stars George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Georgette will take the stage at the Main Buidling for two concerts, 6:30 and 8 p.m., on Thursday, August 10th, while her father’s convertible is parked just feet beyond the glass doors, giving fans a double thrill for the evening.
Clyde came to possess the classic automobile about 5 years ago because he had previously owned a ’63 Ford Galaxie convertible and loved the make and model. When it got damaged in an accident, he decided to look for another. A phone call from a friend around midnight about a lead got Clyde excited when he heard the car had previously been owned by the Possum, himself. In addition, as the car’s new owner, Clyde received a registration card proving George Jones had indeed owned the car at one time.
As the car had spent several years in a museum in Branson, MO., very little restoration was needed….”just a few minor rust spot repairs and motor seals needed replacing,” Clyde noted.
The convertible had around 34,000 miles when Clyde took possession. Driving it to Florida and back once, participating in parades and attending area cruise-ins with it over the past 5 years has brought that mileage up to just under 42,000 miles today.
“While we were in Florida with it,” Clyde said, “a fellow came up to me and introduced himself as having once been the bus driver for George Jones. He told me he used to drive George to breakfast in that car on weekends. I had a great time listening to the adventures he had with George and that convertible.”
While Clyde never got to meet George Jones in person, he looks forward to the adventure he’ll have this August when he shows Georgette Jones her father’s car at the Tioga County Fair.
